This question was asked on Quora, so I thought it would be good to share it here.
The answer below says that if you have 20k monthly visits then you should try to get 10-20 links per day.

How many backlinks per day does a site need to rank well?
There’s no definitive answer to this question, but I’ve seen sites with upwards of 100k+ daily backlinks do just fine.
I believe that the number of backlinks you receive each day is less about how many backlinks you’ll need to rank well and more about how much content you’re producing. If you’re writing quality content and generating lots of traffic, you’ll naturally attract linkers. So, while it might take you 5 days to build 50k backlinks, once you start publishing great content, you’ll find yourself building backlinks at a faster rate than before.
Here’s a few things to keep in mind:
* You don’t want to overdo it. A lot of people seem to think that they need to generate hundreds of thousands of backlinks each month. While some SEO experts recommend getting close to 100k, I wouldn’t recommend going overboard.
* Focus on quality. Backlink profiles are a bit like resumes. You only want to put your best foot forward. There’s nothing wrong with having a couple hundred thousand backlinks, but you shouldn’t be trying to game Google.
* Use tools. Tools like MajesticSEO.com or Ahrefs.com can help you identify high-quality backlinks to your website. These tools can give you an idea of who’s linking to your site and what websites they’re linking to.
* Don’t worry about competition. If you’re not ranking well now, chances are you won’t start ranking well tomorrow either. Think long term. Your goal isn’t to beat out your competitors; it’s to become their competitor.
What is the meaning of a backlink?
A backlink (also known as a backreference) is a hyperlink that points to a page on your own website. A backlink is simply a link pointing towards another page on our website. Backlinks help search engines find out more about your website. We use backlinks to measure how much traffic we receive from certain keywords. You can get backlinks from different websites, blogs, forums, directories, etc. If you have any questions about backlinks, feel free to ask us!
Backlinks are useful for SEO purposes because they give your site credibility and authority. A higher number of backlinks indicates a higher level of trust and authority.
A backlink (also known as back-link) is a link on any webpage pointing back to a page on the same site. Backlinks are important to search engine optimization (SEO). A website’s ranking in search engines is based on several factors, including the number of pages indexed by Google and how often those pages are linked to. If you have 10,000 links to your homepage, but only 1,000 of them point to your home page, then your homepage might not appear as high in the rankings as if you had 10,000 links to it.
So what does a backlink mean? Well, it means that someone somewhere linked to your web page. That person could be linking to you because they think your content is good, or maybe they’re trying to get some sort of SEO benefit out of it. Either way, a link to your web page is a vote of confidence from someone else who thinks your content is worth reading.
Backlinks are different than incoming links. Incoming links are links pointing to your site from other sites around the internet. These types of links don’t affect your rank at all. What matters is whether or not people are clicking on these links, and whether or not they’re sending traffic to your site.
